Conducting a business in McFarland Farm
A frequent question is: "Can I run a business on my property In McFarland Farms?"

Commercial businesses are not allowed. The reason why is stated within the covenants in article 1:B …the purpose is to maintain a good rural character in Lester McFarland Farms.

Article 5.15.1 Commerce: No business activity shall be permitted that changes the appearance of the resident’s home or property, or increases traffic, or is not permitted by the Clallam County Code. No business signs are allowed.

Article 5.15.4 No owner can temporarily rent their home or any portion of their property, such as for Airbnb, vacation rental, etc. for less than 6 months. Property and home rentals 6 months or longer are permitted as long as it is not a secondary dwelling.

Does that mean if you’re an artist or a music teacher you can’t teach individual students within your home? No. You can teach individual students as long as it doesn’t become a nuisance to neighbors, and there are no complaints due to excess noise or parking problems. Also, you cannot have a sign advertising such services; you cannot host multiple students at a time, nor clinics, or anything similar.
The same goes for someone with a massage business or similar. Any personal business must be conducted quietly and be low key. Again, low key, low traffic and quiet are key to having happy neighbors and no complaints. For example, You cannot have an auto repair shop because of the extra noise and extra vehicles sitting on the property.
What if you are a small hobby farmer with produce or eggs to sell? Both are fitting with the rural character of our neighborhood, so are OK. They may also place a small sign and have a small stand to let others know what they have available. The hobby farmer must also have the space for a car to pull off to the side of the road so as not to block traffic. Again, any such business must not pose a nuisance to neighbors.
Prior to opening a business in McFarland Farm please ask the Board if the business complies with our covenants by e-mailing mcfarlandfarm@outlook.com
